Barry & Guy on the campaign trail

Barry & Guy

My name is Barry O'Connell, I brought a pack of your Don't Cook Your Dog (click here to do the same), and as a result of assisting our new Dog Warden he has taken all of my pack with him and in a few weeks time he doing a micro chip drive in village near to our town, in a place called St Osyth five miles from our town, the Council (Tendring District) has just taken back the Dog Warden to "in-house" so to speak and Allen East is the Dog Warden now for their area.

I been assisting Allen over a issue and as result this was a good way of getting across your Don't Cook Your Dog campain, which he was most keen to do so.

I have a Canine Partners Assistance Dog called Guy who is Flat Coated Retriever and is aged 4, he is simply pure sheer magic and my whole life has transform to summer because of him and I have been partnered with him for two of the most wonderful years ever. I got back my wife who is my carer Guy has reduced her role by 80% in the caring field.

Phillip - the Bulldog

Phillip is a 4 1/2 year old Bulldog, he has lots of attitude and personality and loves everyone. He has been accepted for training as an assistance dog to help me as I'm disabled. We are with Dog Aid and our trainer is Kerri Bee of Windrush Dogs for Life. We have just started on level one so there's a long way to go but as he will do anything for cheese he has taken to it really well.

Dog in serious distress saved by Gwyneth Marsh, Swansea -
1st October 2011

After shopping at my local supermarket I returned to my car at 11-40am and noticed that the car next to me had a Pug, sitting on the passenger seat of a Vauxhall Corsa. The dog looked very distressed, there were no windows open in the car and there was no water available for the dog.
The thermometer in my car was reading 25 degrees. I went back into the store and asked a member of staff to put a call out for the owner of the car to return. I was told that they had been putting calls out for over 45 minutes but had had no response so I called the police to ask them to attend. I also called the RSPCA to report the matter.
I stayed with the car, watching the dog become more distressed, moving into the footwell in an attempt to find a cooler spot. After 25 minutes a colleague of my daughter joined us and discovered that the car was unlocked so we gave the dog some water and opened the rear hatch to allow some air into the car. Not knowing our legal position, we didn't remove the dog but continued to comfort him through the open door.
At that point I called the police again and told them that we had opened the car. An officer arrived within 10 minutes and removed the dog, placing it in the police car with his bowl of water. The police car had the air-con on. I stayed with the dog whilst the officer was making enquiries regarding the owner of the car and contacted the RSPCA again. After about 15 minutes, once I knew the dog would be ok, I left for home. The officer called me later in the day to tell me that the car owner had returned 10 minutes after I'd left and claimed that she'd "only been gone for two minutes".

The sticker that gets the message through to all ages! Proud mum Karen Rhodes tell us:

Aaron ThrussellWe were walking through our local town centre when I noticed a woman with two dogs in the car. As it was a hot day I pretended to browse in the nearest shop window as I wanted to see if she was getting the dogs out as well before I said something. As she got out of the car my son said "you can't leave dog in the car, it gets too hot, he will go to sleep and can't wake up".

Bless him, he's not quite four yet and this is what he says every time he sees the dogs cook poster! We were at the National Animal Welfare Trust, where I used to work, a few weeks back and he noticed the poster there as well and referred to it saying the dog was too hot and can't wake up. This was what I told him when he asked what the dog in the poster was doing the first time he saw it as I didn't want to have to explain death in any detail at this age.

The lady he spoke to smiled and got her dogs out but didn't say anything. Whether she was getting them out anyway I don't know, although it was a town centre there are a lot of parks popular with dog walkers nearby.

Personally I don't walk my dog at all during the day in this heat, but he is a black, very hairy collie cross GSD who likes to sit out in the rain and go to sleep in the snow!

This was the first time he had made the connection between the poster and actually having a dog in the car though and I am a very proud Mum!
